Düsseldorf, Germany – 13 December 2018 – Average hotel prices have risen in 2018 compared to 2017 in fewer than 20 of the major cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), reported monthly by global hotel metasearch www.trivago.com

Moscow saw the greatest hotel price difference between its most expensive month this year, June, and its least expensive, November. In June, the month the city hosted the World Cup 2018, an average standard double room went for €158 per night, which is 210% higher than November’s average of €51.

June was also the most expensive month this year for a hotel stay in Chicago, where the average rate of €204 per night during this time was 124% higher compared to the city’s lowest average hotel price in 2018: €91 per night for a standard double room in February.

In Europe, Barcelona likewise saw its hotel prices peak in June this year with the average rate for a standard double room at €140, which is 73% higher compared to the average price of €81 per night during January, the city’s least expensive month for a hotel stay in 2018.

The most and least expensive cities for a hotel stay in 2018

New York City had the most expensive hotel prices listed on the index in 2018 with an average overall rate of €187 per night, followed by San Francisco where a standard double room went for €174 on average this year.

Dubai, Reykjavik, and Singapore complete the list of the five priciest cities for a hotel stay in 2018 with average rates of €165, €156, and €152 per night respectively. Both with an average hotel price of €151 per night for a standard double room in 2018, Amsterdam and Zurich just missed the cut of making that list.

Bogota had the lowest hotel prices on the index in 2018 with an average overall rate of€49 per night this year, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Lima, each with an average hotel price of€50 per night.

Rounding out the list of the five cities on the tHPI with 2018’s lowest average hotel prices are Delhi and Manila with average rates of€53 and€54 per night respectively.

The cities with the lowest average hotel prices in 2018 in Europe are Istanbul, with an average rate of€61 per night this year, and Warsaw, where guests spent on average€63 per night for a standard double hotel room in 2018.

Average hotel prices in 2018 compared to 2017

The majority of cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index report average overall rates for 2018 that are consistent with last year’s average rates for 2017.

Marrakech reports the highest year-on-year increase in average hotel prices in 2018; the average rate of€123 for a standard double room per night this year is 15% higher compared to last year’s average of€107.

Beijing saw the second highest year-on-year rate increase on the index in 2018, with the average price this year up 12% to€85 from €76 in 2017.

The city with the biggest decline in hotel prices this year compared to last is Rio de Janeiro, where the average rate dropped 17% to€67 per night.

Rome, Madrid and London are the only European capitals that show an overall decrease in hotel prices in 2018, with the average rates falling by 1% in Rome and Madrid compared to 2017 and by 7% in London.
